High Lipase and what is it?

Lipase is an enzyme that degrades the lipids (or fats) found in breast milk. Lipases are classified into two types: lipoprotein lipase and bile salt-dependent lipase. Each type plays an important role in your baby’s digestion. Lipase supports your child’s digestive function, aids in the breakdown of triglycerides to release fat-soluble nutrients, and protects against infection.

However, when lipase activity is excessively high, fat is broken down too quickly, resulting in breast milk that tastes or smells soapy or metallic. These modifications may become apparent after your milk has been pumped and stored.

Only a small percentage of women have excessive lipase activity in their breast milk. If you have high lipase breast milk, know that there is nothing wrong with you or your milk.

Most importantly, it has no negative impact on your baby: high lipase breast milk is still safe and nutritious for your baby to drink.
